Workshop at the LSE on 1 March : Preventing statelessness amongst migrants and refugees in North Africa
Readers of the forced migration list are are invited to a workshop at the London School of Economics on 1 March, at which will be presented the results from a research project*, jointly conducted by the LSE and research partners in Egypt and Morocco. The project has considered the responsibilities of both host and sending countries in preserving the right to birth registration and nationality of migrants and refugees and especially their children, with a particular focus on birth and other civil status registration. The workshop will set the findings of the research in the context of similar debates in comparative context, and the international policy framework.
Presenters include: Bronwen Manby, LSE Middle East Centre; Nourhan Abdelaziz, American University in Cairo; Ann Livingston, UNICEF; Solange Valdez-Symonds, Project for the Registration of Children as British Citizens; Alenka Prvinsek, former chair, Council of Europe Committee of Experts on Nationality; Fernando de Medina, Norwegian Refugee Council; Natalie Brinham, Queen Mary University of London; Anne Althaus, International Organization for Migration; Faten Aggad, Maendeleo Group; Tendayi Bloom, The Open University; Elspeth Guild, Queen Mary University of London and Amal de Chickera, Institute on Statelessness and Inclusion.
The final session will discuss next steps for future research and advocacy collaborations.
