Abstract: This session will focus on new geographies of energy access, poverty, and justice in places where energy access initiatives and renewable energy transitions are changing energy landscapes. In recent years, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Sustainable Energy For All (SE4All) initiatives have been catalysts for numerous energy access initiatives in the global South. Non-state actors have also been increasingly involved in developing new markets for renewables in the developing world (Balls, 2016; Munro et al., 2016). At the same time, efforts to engineer energy transitions and the falling cost of renewables are resulting in rapid changes to energy systems and infrastructures around the world. The arrival of new energy technologies, systems, and infrastructures, and the transformation of existing systems and infrastructures creates opportunities for progress on energy access, equity, and justice. Smart-grids and decentralised systems, for example, are promising to democratise energy and deliver numerous benefits to consumers. Yet, often new technologies touted to deliver for the poor fall far short of expectations, and new systems and infrastructures can fail to deliver equity, democracy, or participation (Kumar et al., 2019; Balls and Fischer, 2019). Geographers are well placed to look at energy access, poverty, and justice in contexts of changing energy landscapes. A rich body of geographical work considers energy poverty and justice (Munro et al., 2017; Yenneti et al. 2016; Castán Broto et al., 2018; Salazar and Adams, 2014)as well as energy transitions and the spread of renewables (Power et al., 2016).
We invite theoretical and empirical contributions that build on this work and take forward geographical understanding on energy access, poverty, and justice.
