ETHNOGRAPHIES OFMEGAPROJECTS: SOCIAL AND POLITICAL WORLDS OF LARGE-SCALE INFRASTRUCTURES, September 12-13, 2019,Stockholm University, Sweden
This symposium willbring together social scientists and humanist scholars to discuss large-scaleinfrastructure projects from an ethnographic perspective. In different regionsof the world megaprojects such as roads, bridges, railways, airports, dams, ports, telecommunication as well as energy systems, special economic zones andurban redevelopments proliferate. Megaprojects are characterized by theinvolvement of multiple public and private stakeholders, by a range ofprofessions and expertise, and by their significant social and environmentalimpact. Drawing on classic work on large-scale infrastructure projects and onthe infrastructural turn in anthropology and related discipline this symposiumputs the spotlight on the social and political world of megaprojects.
We would hereby like toinvite contributions from researchers in the social sciences and the humanitiesworking on large-scale infrastructure to explore the potentiality of criticaland comparative ethnographies of ‘megaprojects’. Topics of interest include butare not limited to temporalities, experts, publics and methodology. Places forparticipants are limited and will be allocated by refereed selection.
