The Rise of run-commuting

This research offered a geographical provocation in studying the use of running as a form of transport. Although rarely thought about in such terms, running is a surprisingly common and important contemporary mode of transport globally. While in developing areas of the world, whole journeys may be made by running due to lack of choice, running’s prominence as a transport mode is increasing within developed areas of the world too, even where alternatives exist. Active mobility refers to all forms of travel that require human energy (i.e. non-motor) and the physical effort of the person moving. Active mobility occurs via modes themselves referred to as “active,” namely walking and cycling. [http://en.forumviesmobiles.org/sites/default/files/capture_21.png]

Within two centuries, the growing speed of travel and the ubiquity enabled by telecommunications have changed everything: lifestyles, spatial planning, migration, pollution, global warming… Mobility is therefore at the heart of the major issues of our time. In this exhibition, the Mobile Lives Forum brings together artists and researchers to shed light on the history of these transformations, raise awareness on the collective choices we are facing, and open paths onto desirable futures. The exhibition combines many different artworks (photographs, objects, paintings, drawings, videos, installations), many of which were commissioned by the Forum, forming a dialogue with the National Archives collections and scientific publications.
