Abstract:
In this presentation, Dr Zijia Wang will share his work on urban rail passengers using transit smart-card data (TSD). Before going into the topic, he will give a brief introduction about the extraordinarily fast development of urban rail systems in China recently, followed by a discussion on the government regulations behind this rail boom in a centralized political system. Then, TSD-based research from various perspectives will be presented in detail, including comparing travel patterns derived from smart card data between London and Beijing, passengers' response to an instinct fare change in Beijing, TSD enhanced rail line planning, demand forecasting at the station level, and travel behaviour change detection using TSD data over years. Finally, a project still in progress about passenger emergency evacuation in the case of fire using virtual reality technology will be reported.

Biography:
Dr Zijia Wang is currently working as an association professor in railway engineering at Beijing Jiaotong University, China. He received his Bachelor, Master and PhD degrees from this railway-based university. He was a visitor to UCL for one year in 2014. Dr Wang's research focuses on the passenger side of urban rail using non-traditional data such as transit smart card data and internet datasets. The topics range from pedestrian simulation and evacuation at the micro-level to travel behaviour at the macro-level.
