The English Goethe Society is delighted to announce the winners of our 2018 prizes.
The PEGS Prize for an outstanding article appearing in Publications of the English Goethe Society goes to Caroline Sauter (Frankfurt) for her article 'Writing (in) Love: Goethe's "Buch Suleika" and the Biblical Song of Songs', which appeared in PEGS 87.3 (2018), pp. 188-203.
The winner of the Goethe Prize for an outstanding student essay on Goethe is Amy Ainsworth (Hughes Hall, Cambridge) for '"Das Vorurteil ist gut, zu seiner Zeit: denn es macht glücklich": The notion of prejudice in Herder, Goethe and Jacobowski'.
The biennial Thomas Mann Prize (funded by the Ida Herz Bequest) for an outstanding student essay on Thomas Mann was awarded to Williams Andrews (Somerville College, Oxford) for his essay 'Buddenbrooks: The harbinger of Mann's style'.

Prize Essay Competitions
The English Goethe Society has three essay prizes in its gift.
Goethe Prize
The English Goethe Society awards one yearly prize for the best undergraduate or post-graduate essay on Goethe's life and works. The prize is in the amount of £100. Articles that meet the standards of original research will be considered for publication in Publications of the English Goethe Society. The closing date is 1 October every year.
Essays of up to 5,000 words, which should not have previously been published, should be sent by e-mail to the editors of PEGS: Dr Kevin Hilliard ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>, Dr Astrid Köhler ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>), and Professor W. PEGS Prize
The English Goethe Society awards one yearly prize for the best article published in PEGS<http://www.englishgoethesociety.org/PEGSSubmissions.html> the previous year. The selection process will be conducted by the editors and expert members of the Editorial Board. The prize is in the amount of £100. The winner will be announced at the first Council Meeting of the English Goethe Society each year.
Thomas Mann Prize
The Thomas Mann Prize, in the amount of £100, is funded by the Ida Herz Bequest (Ida Herz was a friend of Thomas Mann), and is awarded for an undergraduate or post-graduate essay that addresses some aspect of Thomas Mann's life and work. It is awarded in even-numbered years, alternating with an endowed lecture; at the discretion of the Council, the essay may be published in PEGS. Essays should be no more than 5000 words long and should be neither published nor under consideration for publication. The closing date is 1 October in even years. Submissions should be made by e-mail to the editors of PEGS, as set out above.
