I agree.
Still, at Coventry we have been able to make productive use of a certain
degree of ambiguity and play between our sense of disruption, as
outlined for example in this book on Open Education
(https://curve.coventry.ac.uk/open/file/c04530ce-d16a-46ca-b359-a905195a76cb/1/Open%20education.pdf),
and that which subsequently came to feature in our university's mission
statement, which is indeed closer 'disruptive innovation'.
We even had a Centre for Disruptive Media at one point.

>>> Subject: Scholastica and 'Academic-Led Publishing Day'
>>> Dear comrades and members of the collective,
>>> We have recently received the email underneath from Scholastica about
>>> whether we as a collective would like to take part in an "Academic-Led
>>> Publishing Day" they are initiating. We have discussed this informally
>>> with several members and have decided not to take part in this day on
>>> behalf of the Radical Open Access Collective, we outline why we made
>>> this decision in our response below. We do not want to speak on behalf
>>> of individual members in this matter though, so if anyone is
>>> interested in taking part individually they can of course do so.
>>> Dear Danielle,
>>> Thank you for your invitation to take part in "Academic-Led Publishing
>>> Day". There are various reasons why from a Radical Open Access
>>> perspective we would choose not to take part in such a day. Let me set
>>> out some of these reasons. First of all, we feel the name of your
>>> proposed event is problematic. None of the organisations you mention
>>> in your email is academic-led (or scholar-led if you prefer that
>>> term)-with the exception of Ubiquity Press, which is however
>>> predominantly operating as a commercial service and infrastructure
>>> provider. Looking at the organisations you list this seems very much
>>> an "academy-led" event, and we suggest you perhaps change the name
>>> accordingly, i.e. to "Academy-Led Publishing Day".
>>> We feel words are important here, even more so as a true "Academic-Led
>>> Publishing Day", would indeed be one that is organised and initiated
>>> by academic-led publishing initiatives themselves instead of by
>>> commercial service providers such as yourself. The Radical Open Access
>>> Collective promotes community ownership of research (as you say you
>>> do), but for us this includes ownership and custodianship of open
>>> publishing infrastructures. To this end we have set up an information
>>> portal which lists open source publishing software and platforms, open
>>> and non-commercial alternatives to the services you yourself and
>>> Ubiquity provide. We feel taking part in an "Academic-Led Publishing
>>> Day"-which we would like to emphasise is not academic-led but
>>> initiated by yourself, a for-profit intermediary-as it is currently
>>> conceived means we will indirectly be promoting the commercial
>>> services you provide. Although we acknowledge that presses might
>>> choose to use your services and benefit from them, as a collective we
>>> aim to promote and seek alliances with non-profit open alternatives
>>> instead.
>>> We would very much like to support an "Academic-Led Publishing Day" if
>>> it was indeed initiated bottom up by scholar-led publishing
>>> initiatives, and we very much support the not-for-profit organisations
>>> that are taking part in this event. We also don't want to speak for
>>> individual members and would not want to discourage them from taking
>>> part in this event (and we will forward your message to our mailing
>>> list), but as a collective we choose to pass on this one, we hope you
>>> understand.
>>> Best wishes,
>>> Janneke
>>> Hi Janneke,
>>> I hope this email finds you well! I'm reaching out about an event
>>> we're organizing this February along with the Library Publishing
>>> Coalition, Michigan Publishing, Ubiquity Press, the University of
>>> California Press and others around academy-owned journal publishing
>>> called "Academic-Led Publishing Day." We thought it would be a great
>>> opportunity for the Radical Open Access Collective to join other
>>> organizations in raising awareness about the need for community
>>> ownership of research.
>>> "Academic-Led Publishing Day" is a group-run digital event, during
>>> which participating individuals/organizations will be sharing
>>> resources and facilitating discussions around academy-owned journal
>>> publishing.
>>> It is important to everyone involved that there not be any "ownership"
>>> of this day. Rather, it is an independent initiative that all
>>> participants are "co-hosting" and co-promoting via a shared event
>>> website and their own channels.
>>> I was wondering if the Radical Open Access Collective would be
>>> interested in joining? I'm attaching an invitation PDF to this email
>>> with additional information about the event and how to get involved.
>>> I'd be happy to schedule a brief call to discuss this in more detail.
>>> All the best,
>>> Danielle
