Thank you Terry. I feel very flattered.
It’s nice to be appreciated! I should however point out, as you do yourself, that there are lots of people before me who have taken similar views. There is a lot to be said for good old fashioned English common sense use of language.
For those engaged in PhDs and other research it’s worth pointing to some earlier work in this area on which I base my own approach. To do so in detail would make for a long post but I can give some pointers.
Four seminal thinkers provide useful articulations of the main ideas. Ironically, their mode of writing is difficult, but I think the struggle with their work can be rewarding. I’m thinking of Buber, Bakhtin, Wittgenstein, and Shotter. The last of these provides a useful introduction, albeit somewhat abstract. Worth the struggle. Bubber is much easier and more accessible.

While none of them have anything to say directly about design—their main focus is language and culture—their work informs a sensibility towards design that I’m very drawn to, particularly as it relates to information design.
