Hi all
This is really interesting and timely;
We're just about to submit a substantial update to the Cochrane review on membrane sweeping for induction of labour (20 studies added) (more on that soon) (led by a midwife and PhD student, Elaine Finucane)
As has been said, evidence suggests that it is effective in increasing spontaneous onset of labour and what evidence is there suggest women find it acceptable and would recommend it to others.
We know little about the optimal gestational timing and frequency of membrane sweeping. We've just (last week) been funded to assess the feasibility of, and inform the optimal design of a future proposed definitive trial to examine the effectiveness (including optimal timing and frequency) of membrane sweeping. This includes a pilot parallel trial with embedded factorial design and an embedded qualitative package to assess the acceptability and feasibility to women and clinicians. This forms a major component of Elaine's PhD.
Will be interesting to see what comes from this.
Le gach dea-mhéin
