Dear Tim
We updated all our open access PCs with the plugin, along with an ad blocking plugins that minimise tracking cookies. We have a part time member of staff who maintains an open access network that blocks almost nothing (but quite mysteriously, does block trust e-learning modules!) so this is a welcome addition to the configurations.
I think it is an excellent compromise for a modern open library service, when blocking websites is felt to be overly draconian as our library users are educated professionals rather than rowdy college students. It merely subtly notifies the user where a news website may contain poor quality journalism frequently subject to court cases. The softly softly approach to information literacy.
We will be keeping a good eye on the plugin however, as there are many opportunities for it to introduce biased political opinions. Edge case websites which may be an 'amber' become red due to author bias. It’s a start.
I don't however at all recommend tweeting that you installed it, if you don't want lots of angry emails from American far right bloggers. They seem to believe that highlighting the quality of news sources is one step away from a police state. They don't very much like librarians either.
Also interested in general opinions. Keep them coming.

Subject: NewsGuard - who's feeding you the news?
Hi all,
Just came across this browser extension and thought it would be useful to flag up - https://www.newsguardtech.com/ Even more exciting there is a "for libraries" section.
An extract:
Librarians have long been champions of news literacy. By providing the free NewsGuard browser on library computers, librarians help patrons become better informed about the sources of news they encounter online.
Librarians share this "Who's Feeding You the News?" information sheet about NewsGuard with their patrons https://www.newsguardtech.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/NewsGuard_LibraryHandout_Color.pdf . In addition to being able to being able to use the NewsGuard browser plug-in while accessing the internet while at the library, patrons can download the NewsGuard plug-in for free on their own desktop or laptop computer.
I'd be interested to hear any reactions!
I just tried it and it showed the DailyMail website "generally fails to maintain basic standards of accuracy and accountability".
So I'm guessing it works ok...
Kind regards
Tim
