At our external examiner induction event (we operate a centrally run session with additional opportunities for local level support on the same day) we have a session on "what if" scenarios where attendees discuss various scenarios and try and come to a solution regarding what best practice might be in given situations and how these might be related to regulatory aspects or other expectations about the role. We find that the dialogues that take place in the session are really helpful not only to new externals but also to externals new to our institution (but who have had previous EE experience elsewhere) to share ideas about best practice.

I wonder if colleagues across the list would like to contribute to building up a list of "what if" situations. I am more than happy to compile a list of detail submitted by list members (through the list or via email - [log in to unmask]) and circulate to anyone who might find it valuable. As a start point here are some of the scenarios that we currently use.

- Having looked at a number of batches of assessed work, you feel that the quality of marking and feedback for students in a collaborative partner college differs significantly from that provided for students on the home programme at the University

- You would like to look at some level 4 work for a UG programme but have been told it doesn’t count towards the degree classification and that it’s not usually seen by the external

- The programme team would like you to viva TWO students out of a complete third year cohort who are on borderline UG classification grades

- A student contacts you directly to try and help resolve programme leadership issues

- You believe that issues exist within a programme which represent a major concern for both the Programme / University yet you have had no response from either since raising your concern in your annual report
