Dear Andrew Jameson,
I would like to solicit your help to promote the 2019 CEU Summer University program
(http://summeruniversity.ceu.edu ) among your academic and professional contacts who may be interested in the
following courses (see short announcement for each below): Romani Identities and
Antigypsyism<https://summeruniversity.ceu.edu/romani-2019> and Cultures of Dissent in Eastern Europe (1945-1989):
Research Approaches in the Digital Humanities<https://summeruniversity.ceu.edu/dissent-2019> .
We would be grateful if you could forward this email to those potentially interested in our summer school
(individuals, listservs, electronic journals, etc.) and/or have a short announcement placed on a relevant web site
(blog, social media page, etc.), including your departmental web sites and Facebook pages. Could you please send me
the links when you’ve posted the announcements on SUN? Thank you very much.
With best wishes,

CfA – Postgraduate summer course “ Romani Identities and Antigypsyism<https://summeruniversity.ceu.edu/possible-
2018>” at Central European University (CEU) in Budapest, Hungary, 1 July - 12 July, 2019
The Summer School will focus on the nexus between Romani identities and antigypsyism. Antigypsyism is a core
concept of critical Romani studies, and can be used methodologically, analytically and theoretically as a way of
understanding the position of Roma in Europe historically and in the present moment. A growing body of scholarship
grounds our understanding of antigypsyism in the Europeanization of the Roma issue and neoliberal regime expansion
following the fall of communism. Other scholars originate antigypsyism in the nation-state building process. Some
scholars define antigypsyism as an ideology and as a code of conduct that has been central to European culture.
The aim of this CEU Summer School is to link participating students and scholars with a transnational network of
scholars in order to investigate the forms of oppressions faced by Roma and to analyze the mechanisms through which
exclusion of Roma takes place in different fields of public life. A methodological, analytical and theoretical
focus on antigypsyism serves as prerequisite for a multifaceted research agenda with strong policy implications.
The questions this summer school aims to address are: What is antigypsyism? Is this the best term to be used? Is
antigypsyism measurable? How to analyze antigypsyism? What are its manifestations? How is it produced and
reproduced in different areas of public life? Is there a need to propose new terms to interpret and analyze the
situation of Roma? What is the relation between antigypsyism and Romani mobility, often defined as nomadism? How is
antigypsyism related to gender and class?
Accepted participants will receive a scholarship to cover participation costs.
First application deadline: February 14, 2019.

Digital Humanities<https://summeruniversity.ceu.edu/dissent-2019>” at Central European University (CEU) in
Budapest, Hungary, 15 July - 23 July, 2019
This 7-day seminar in digital humanities research methods is designed to expose a new generation of scholars in
Cold War history and culture to methods of analysis and discovery involving computational techniques. Designed and
run by NEP4DISSENT<http://nep4dissent.eu/> (New Exploratory Phase in Research on East European Cultures of Dissent,
nep4dissent.eu), COST Action 16213, the inspiration for the course is built around the transfer of knowledge from
technologists and data scientists to humanists. In the course of the 7-day session the participants will have hands-
on experience with the entire life cycle of a digital humanities project design, leading to a single, tangible
outcome in the form of a fully searchable and interactive dataset usable for art-curatorial purposes.
No prior knowledge of any computational methods, or even data-driven approaches to research are expected from the
participants. However, we will be targeting scholars, librarians/archivists, and art and cultural heritage
curators, who can bring first-hand knowledge of the main research area.
First application deadline: February 14, 2019.
