Acceptance of this as a joke (sorry - I didn’t laugh . . . ) depends on whether you can believe that the shape of the kingfisher’s beak has anything to do with the shape of the front of a shinkansen. Since I think that this is a totally made-up story (I can find no documentary evidence - the work on model shinkansens was done in the 1990s) then the simile loses its impact (now THAT is a joke!).
