*Short abstract*
Given the ever-frequent time-limitations of anthropological research in
contemporary academia, how do ethnographers deal with processes of
fermentation, understood as a metaphor for ongoing social transformations
that require time? This panel invites papers which discuss experiences of
constraints/opportunities regarding the collection and analysis of
ethnographic material.
*Long abstract*This panel invites proposals which address questions of
constraints and opportunities in contemporary anthropological research.
Tapping on the notion of fermentation, understood as a metaphor for ongoing
social transformations that require time and observation in the ‘longue
durée’, we invite papers that enquire into the changing academic contexts
in which the ethnographic research takes place. Bearing in mind that social
phenomena are never complete but are constantly under transformation in
processes of fermentation that take time to unfold in the social realm,
this panel takes a ‘work-in-progress’ approach in inviting researchers to
share their own experiences of managing notions of time, data collection,
and research results when conducting field research. It also wishes to
tackle fermentation as a process of understanding, managing, and working
with ethnographic material upon return from the field. We wish to stimulate
discussion on contemporary fieldwork practices by asking, for example: How
do time constraints shape ethnographic fieldwork and its results? What
opportunities are there for ethnographers to immerse in their field
research and explore social processes over time? Given the ever-frequent
time-limitations of anthropological research in contemporary academia, how
do ethnographers deal with processes of fermentation in the field and when
writing up? We invite proposals for paper presentations in English,
Portuguese, and Spanish.
We look forward to your submissions.
Best wishes,
Giulia Gonzales and Katerina Chatzikidi
