Dear All,
A fully-funded PhD opportunity is available at the Institute for Transport Studies at the University of Leeds, for October 2019 start. Details can be found at: https://environment.leeds.ac.uk/research-opportunity/19/research-degrees/1134/adapting-road-infrastructure-for-autonomous-vehicles-epsrc-dtp
Project Title: Adapting Road Infrastructure for Autonomous Vehicles
Project description
Autonomous vehicles are emerging as a solution to human driver limitations. They also provide opportunities for more efficient use of the road space reducing congestion. This however, comes with new and different challenges to road design and management, travel demand forecast and safety. As car manufacturers are focusing on making future cars for existing roads, little work has been done on how the roads should adapt to new vehicles. Many principles of highway design developed in the 20th century were based on human factors, such as brake reaction time. The assumptions that highway engineers made in the past to derive design standards for road geometry, pavement, etc., need to be revisited. Future-proofing design of this permanent asset is needed for a smart, flexible and demand responsive mobility. Good adaptation of roads in return, will encourage the uptake of autonomous vehicles.
Candidate will look into current design standards for roads and junctions, and investigate the implications of having autonomous vehicles for road infrastructure. The design principles of autonomous vehicles in relation to road performance and demand for enabling infrastructures, will be studied. The project expects to generate evidence-based recommendations to amendments of current road design standards.
Value: 3.5 years to include tuition fees and tax-free stipend.
