Upon closer inspection it says ./python3 file is a broken link, which appears to be the problem (permissions are ok). I've not been able to find any errors in the installation that would explain it. Not sure if my setup might have something to do with it: I'm running Linux through VirtualBox on a Windows host. I did previously have some issues with VirtualBox not having permission to create symbolic links (it came up with a specific error about it) but I found a solution to that error so I don't think that is the problem.
