World-class archive of 2000 radical political posters available online
A unique collection of previously uncatalogued poster art spanning 1870-1990 is now searchable online for the first time. The Marx Memorial Library is home to these originals, filling three A0 plan chests at historic Marx House. Subjects range from the Russian Revolution, to the Spanish Civil War, anti-apartheid campaigns and the post-war movement for nuclear disarmament.
Thanks to generous sponsorship from the Peoples’ Support Foundation, each print has been individually photographed and catalogued in detail; researchers can look up artists, descriptions, subjects and dates. The resource is hosted on the MML’s website, searchable through its Soutron catalogue https://marx.soutron.net/Portal/Default/en-GB/Search/SimpleSearch.
‘We want to ensure these phenomenal pieces documenting socialist history and working-class struggle around the world to engage as many people as possible. This is an international resource. This is the first stage in learning much more about these posters’ explains Meirian Jump, Archivist & Library Manager.
The posters - which include, for example, a 1893 Manchester Anarchist Group notice for a meeting on Stevenson Square, a work by Denisov on the 1917 Russian Revolution, and works promoting literacy produced by the Spanish Republican government during the 1936-39 civil war, - be available to researchers, on loan to galleries and museums and to school and student workshops on request.
Christine Lindey, art historian who recently published Art for All : British socially committed art from World War Two to the Cold War, will be accompanied by representatives from MML and Graham Bignell Conservation studios at a special launch at MML on 6 February at 7pm.
