It sounds like cells of double values are not what you expect. So the 1st step should be to find out what is contained in the files, i.e., what kind of pre-processing was applied and what kind of output was saved. (Is it 2D or 3D data, what does it represent?)
I would suggest to clarify this first. Maybe the person who did the preprocessing can also export the results in a different format.
