Dear All,
Interesting opportunity/job opening at ITLS. Please share with potential candidates.
Postdoctoral Research Associate – Future Rural & Regional Transport
Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies
University of Sydney Business School
To further strengthen our group, we are looking for a postdoctoral researcher interested in future transport services and policies. We are particularly keen to expand our expertise regarding passenger and/or freight transport services to rural, regional and remote (RRR) communities. Regional NSW has unique challenges that are not encountered in metropolitan areas such as Sydney. The vastness of rural and remote areas makes it difficult to maintain transport infrastructure and offer public transport (including air) and taxi services at an acceptable cost recovery. It is not congestion but accessibility and competitiveness of the transportation value chain (compared to individual car travel) that is the key concern in regional areas, i.e. having affordable access to essential services such as hospitals, education or any business activities and also being connected to the world. From previous research we know that transport services do have significant economic, social and cultural impact on RRR communities (many would not even exist without transport services), and are known as a success factor for overcoming socio-economic disadvantages. The imminent arrival of autonomous vehicles and low-altitude unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) as well as new high speed transport services (rail, air, or tube based) offer important new opportunities. It is likely that digital and technological advancements will arrive sooner in regional areas where traffic is less dense and complex compared to large cities. Research in this area, particularly around institutional, management and governance questions can make a significant contribution to improving mobility and the transportation of goods in RRR regions as it will not only help to predict but create and shape future (transferable) transport solutions where they are most needed.
As the successful applicant you will have:

-strong quantitative analysis skills
-a demonstrated interest in transport and logistics management across all modes of transport (including aviation)
