About:
Museums are increasingly employing digital media to enhance the visitor experience, but how do we know when to invest in digital tools and how do we measure success?
The Museum of the University of St Andrews (MUSA) is currently collaborating with the School of Classics and the School of Psychology & Neuroscience to establish whether different display formats affect the way visitors perceive and remember archaeological material. Come along to discover what we have found out about visitor preferences and memory formation from our two studies Through A Glass Darkly and Memories for Museum Exhibits, which have involved around 150 participants to date.
You will also have the opportunity to try some practical experiments as you compare and discuss the experience of viewing artefacts behind glass, handling originals, physical replicas and 3D digital models. Finally, we will reflect on the audience research methods and the pros and cons of working with focus groups versus controlled experiments with individuals.
Suitable for:
- Exhibition, interpretation and learning professionals: who want to understand more about the connection between display methods and memory making
- Visitor studies practitioners: who want to find out more about the strengths and weaknesses of research methods relating to object based learning
Speakers:
- Rebecca Sweetman, Professor of Ancient History & Archaeology, School of Classics
- Dr Akira O’Connor, Senior Lecturer, School of Psychology and Neuroscience
- Alison Hadfield, Learning and Access Curator, MUSA
