Dear Starlink users,
If you update via rsync from EAO's nightly starlink builds, then as of
today if you rsync from the linux build you should get a version of
Starlink which will by default write all .sdf output in our new format
files. This is the HDF5 based file format we are moving to. It will
still have the same .sdf extension. (Unfortunately, we currently
don't have a working OSX nightly build due to some hardware issues; we
are working to restore this service on a replacement machine.)
If you need to switch back to writing old-style files, you can simply
set the environmental variable 'HDS_VERSION' to '4' .
Users of the last (2018A) release will be able to read these files. If
you wish to send .sdf files to users with older versions of Starlink
either they will need to upgrade or you will need to convert your
files.
To convert an individual file, the easiest way is probably to set the
HDS_VERSION environmental variable, and then run KAPPA's ndfcopy.
I've written up a few notes on the changes on the JCMT SciCom blog at
https://www.eaobservatory.org/jcmt/help/softwareblog/
Please let us know if you encounter any problems with this format, or
if you have any questions.
Thanks,
Sarah
