Hi Hope,
Good to hear about Lincoln's expanding music collection. We're definitely not a new music library here at Cambridge, but the way we've arranged our open-shelf scores is as follows. We have our own classification system here, which means that we were able to keep the scores together at the beginning of the music sequence (M200-M390), with music literature following (M400 onwards). Within the music sequence there are further sub-divisions for collected editions, orchestral music, chamber music, operas, hymnals, piano music etc. So if a reader is looking to browse piano music, for example, they can go to M340 and browse through the shelves.
Libraries that deal with parts will sometimes split parts and scores, but make sure that the shelf-mark of the corresponding part is on the score, so that they can easily be found by the reader / staff member, if you do this.
Although it's true that readers are often looking to browse through similar genres, making sure that new items are added to an electronic catalogue is important for those looking for a specific item. Much of our material (downside of being an older music library) is still on a card catalogue only, and readers who have grown up with computers tend to believe that if it's not online, it doesn't exist.
Good luck with your new collections. With my IAML blog editor's hat on, would love to have a post from you at some point about the ups and downs of running an expanding new collection!
Best wishes,
Margaret

Subject: [IAML-UK-IRL] Sheet Music for a New Music Programme

Dear All,
I hope this finds you well. My name is Hope Williard and I am the academic subject librarian for music at the University of Lincoln. Sheet music is fairly new to our library and I am writing to ask for advice.
The Lincoln music programme is now in its fourth year and the music collections have grown along with the programme. In particular, our music academics have started to request a growing number of sheet music and scores for their teaching. This has been catalogued and shelved with the main book collection but they have told us they would prefer to have sheet music in its own area of the library to make browsing and discovery easier. The musicians tell us that they do not typically set out with a particular piece of music they want to find, but rather a broad category they want to browse around, which would be made easier by having all of the sheet music in one place. It would be helpful for us to know how other libraries handle these issues, especially those with newer music programmes. Does your library have a separate area of the library for scores? If not, it would be helpful to know how you handle any issues that come up with students and staff finding and using sheet music.
Thank you in advance for any thoughts you have time to give.
With very best wishes,
Hope Williard
