Dear All,
I hope this finds you well. My name is Hope Williard and I am the academic subject librarian for music at the University of Lincoln. Sheet music is fairly new to our library and I am writing to ask for advice.
The Lincoln music programme is now in its fourth year and the music collections have grown along with the programme. In particular, our music academics have started to request a growing number of sheet music and scores for their teaching. This has been catalogued and shelved with the main book collection but they have told us they would prefer to have sheet music in its own area of the library to make browsing and discovery easier. The musicians tell us that they do not typically set out with a particular piece of music they want to find, but rather a broad category they want to browse around, which would be made easier by having all of the sheet music in one place. It would be helpful for us to know how other libraries handle these issues, especially those with newer music programmes. Does your library have a separate area of the library for scores? If not, it would be helpful to know how you handle any issues that come up with students and staff finding and using sheet music.
Thank you in advance for any thoughts you have time to give.
With very best wishes,
Hope Williard
