THE INNER EYE: Festival of East German Cinema - November 21st - 25th
Fri 21 - Sun 25 November, Side Cinema and Tyneside Cinema
A four-day festival of East German Cinema to coincide with ‘The Inner Eye’ photographic exhibition at the Side Gallery.
We will be screening and discussing key cinematic works spanning documentaries about photographers, poetic short films and dramatic feature films that reveal fascinating insights into life behind the Iron Curtain. We are honoured to be joined by key filmmakers and academics who will facilitate conversations after the film screenings and as part of a panel discussion during the symposium at Side Gallery. Amber have their own history with the GDR, having made a film there in 1987, two years before the fall of the Wall, which will be shown along with it’s East German counterpart, made in North Shields by the celebrated DEFA director Winfried Junge. The festival, curated by Jan Soboka, will take place at the SIDE CINEMA and TYNESIDE CINEMA with the Symposium being hosted at the SIDE GALLERY. This has been made possible by an international effort presented by AMBER and the Goethe-Institut with the support of Dok2media, DEFA, Film Hub North – part of the BFI Film Audience Network, and the Arts Council England.
