Dear all,
We are delighted to announce more details concerning the upcoming
DataTech19 conference (14 March 2019), organised as part of DataFest
by The Data Lab. This one-day data science conference aims to bring
together members of industry, the public sector, and academia for
technical presentations and discussions of important topics in data
science, to share technical expertise, and engage in networking and
collaboration.
As an update, Mine Çetinkaya-Rundel (Associate Professor of the
Practice, Duke University, and Data Scientist + Professional Educator
at RStudio) will be joining us in Edinburgh as keynote speaker at
DataTech19. Mine’s work focuses on innovation in statistics and data
science pedagogy, with an emphasis on computation, reproducible
research, student-centered learning, and open-source education. Mine
also works on the OpenIntro project and teaches the popular Statistics
with R MOOC on Coursera. In 2016 Mine received the ASA Waller
Education Award and in 2018 the Harvard Pickard Lecture Award.
Mine will be speaking alongside our other keynote, Jared Lander, Chief
Data Scientist of Lander Analytics (a data science consultancy based
in New York City), and Adjunct Professor of Statistics at Columbia
University. Jared also organises the New York Open Statistical
Programming Meetup and the New York R Conference. The applications of
his work on data management, multilevel models, machine learning,
generalized linear models and statistical computing have ranged from
music and fund raising, to finance and humanitarian relief efforts. He
is also the author of R for Everyone: Advanced Analytics and Graphics
and is creating a course with DataCamp on Lasso and Elastic-Net
Regularized Generalized Linear Models via R package `glmnet`.
Recently, he has spoken on topics such as parallel computing in R,
deep learning, machine learning in R and time series in R at Strata in
New York and London and ODSC London this year.
We are now welcoming talk proposals on topics such as: scaling
algorithms, software and hardware to cope with large amounts of data,
machine learning techniques, deep learning, data visualisation and
query facilities, reproducible and collaborative data science, and
more! With the deadline soon approaching, find out here how to submit
your proposal and register to attend.

Dear Colleagues,
The next meeting of the Community of Edinburgh Research Software Engineers will be 1300-1500 on 21st November in
the West Court of the ECA Main Building.
Anyone who is involved with, or interested in, the development, use, support or management of research software is
very welcome to attend.
Building on the launch event last month, our main aim at this point is to provide an opportunity for people to
learn about the RSE community and get involved.
Coffee and cake, with ample time for networking, will be provided.
We are looking for a number of very short (2 minutes, 1 slide) lightning talks on any aspect of research software –
please use the registration form to indicate if you would like to speak.
Registration: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/edinburgh-rse-community-meeting-eca-tickets-51879677512
Further information: https://cerse.github.io/2018-11-21-ECA/
Please circulate to anyone in the Edinburgh area who you think may be interested.
Thanks,
Mario
