Subject: Latina/o Studies Association Executive Council Statement on Migrant Caravan
[LSA-Logo-c1.png]
Statement from the Executive Council of the Latina/o Studies Association (LSA) Regarding the “Migrant Caravan” from Central America
The Executive Council of the Latina/o Studies Association (LSA) expresses great concern for the safety of migrants presently fleeing en masse and as “caravans” from systemic violence, poverty, hunger, and natural disasters in Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador, or the so called Northern Triangle. On October 12, 2018, migrants (including women, accompanied and unaccompanied children, and men of all ages) began their journey from their countries to seek asylum at the U.S.-Mexico border. Along the way, they have encountered heavily armed police forces, tear gas assaults, and blocked borders. The Trump Administration has ordered U.S. troops to meet the migrants at the U.S. Southern Border. The LSA condemns all forms of violence used against migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers, who have a human right to migrate and move across political territories in search of security and well-being. The LSA implores people to seek accurate information about the root causes of current and historical migration from Latin and Central America and the Caribbean, including decades of U.S. economic, political and military intervention, that have contributed to high levels of violence and insecurity in the region.
We encourage LSA Members to:
• Stand in solidarity with migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers fleeing violence in the Americas and elsewhere;
• Oppose sending U.S. troops to the U.S.-Mexico border to contain migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers;
• Urge Congress members and the Attorney General of the United States to work toward comprehensive immigration reform;
• Hold our local institution, organizations, employers, governments, and communities accountable for protecting migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers and for providing necessary information, resources, and services to them and the public.

Mexico, 2018 Fiction: The people in the caravan just want to earn more money and take jobs away from citizens of the countries they arrive in. Fact: While poverty is a major issue and may affect people’s decisions to leave Honduras and other countries, their reasons for leaving are often more urgent than simply economic ones and involve life and death decisions.
