If you look (very carefully) at one of the bas-reliefs at the base of Nelson's column you will see a black sailor.

Subject: [BSA-RACE] Hidden Chains by John Charlton
I’ve just finished reading this very important book, Hidden Chains: the Slavery Business and north East England 1600-1865 (Tyne Bridge Publishing, 2008) Of course, as its 10 years old, you might have read it….
We need books like this from every corner, certainly every port in the UK. Charlton looks at the abolitionist and anti-slavery movement in the Newcastle area as well as the response to slavery/independence issues in what became the USA. And also to the responses to the ‘slave revolts’ in the Caribbean. Then at who from that area was involved in the ‘nefarious’ trade, who owned plantations, who supplied these with needed goods and sold the sugar, coffee, cotton et al imported from there. He also tries to discover if any local manufacturers might have been involved. And then at how this riches was used – to build mansions, purchase more land, perhaps to invest in canals and railways.
I must send to the RN his report on HMS Newcastle, which visited the Tyne, as he notes that 10% of the crew were from ‘continental Europe. Africa, North America and the Caribbean’ (p.92). The RN wants to continue denying it had any Black crew.
Many excellent illustrations and a useful timeline.
