Marymount International School of Rome is delighted to invite you to our November Marymount Talks.
Continuing our journey across the disciplines, we are excited to be welcoming two important but very different academics to discuss ideas with us.
The Politics of Hunger (Thursday 8th November 1800)
Dr Shawn McGuire, an 'Indiana Jones' among scientists, takes his science into the field to prevent hunger in vulnerable communities. In doing so, he has gained fascinating insights into the challenges of applying objective scientific knowledge from the 'lab' to the messy and unpredictable real world outside. He will talk about the real-life examples he has experienced in countries such as Ethiopia, Rwanda, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Madagascar, South Sudan, DR Congo, Haiti, and Timor-Leste.
Spellbound: Magic, Ritual and Witchcraft (Wednesday 28th November 1700)
Art historian Professor Marina Wallace explores the weird and wonderful world of magic and our eternal human quest to control and predict the world around us. The dark twin of science, magic springs from the same human fears of the unknown. By focussing on artefacts from the history of witchcraft - for example, books of spells, magic charms and crystal balls - Professor Wallace makes the connections between our own lives and those of the practitioners of magic in bygone ages.
Please RSVP to this email address if you would like to attend. Please see the attached flyer for more information.
We look forward to welcoming you to what promise to be challenging and thought-provoking events. Delicious aperitivi and drinks will be served.
