Dear Colleagues,
Following The National Archives apprenticeship awareness day on the 24th October, it was clear that there is demand from the sector for a new apprenticeship standard for the role of Archivist. The development of such an option would allow people to train for this profession via a work based route (potentially including the existing archives qualification as the 'off-the-job-learning' portion of the apprenticeship), enabling us to open up the profession to many new people.
To get the ball rolling, we need to establish a trailblazer group, made up of employers that are representative of archives across the county (type, scale and geography), with personnel who have a comprehensive understanding of the archivist role. We'd ideally like to secure between 10-15 different representatives, who will commit to supporting the development of this standard and who will, in principle, consider offering the apprenticeship if/when it is approved for delivery. The development of a new standard typically takes a year, but can be more/less depending on how regularly the group meets and feeds into content. It is rarely necessary for the trailblazer group to meet more than 6 times during development.
Creative & Cultural Skills has offered to support the trailblazer group through the development process, and will complete all necessary paperwork and liaison with the Institute for Apprenticeships (IfA) on behalf of the group. They have successfully supported a number of trailblazer groups through the process to date.
If you're keen to support this, please can you confirm your availability for the first trailblazer meeting by completing this doodle poll https://doodle.com/poll/hhdpqvqutnvdqur6 by 18/11/18. If you don't wish to formally join the trailblazer group but are happy to be consulted as developments progress, please let me know by return of email and we'll make sure you're kept in the loop.
I'd also be grateful if you could share your current Archivist job description(s), so Creative & Cultural Skills can analyse these prior to the first meeting, as this will help us map the common core of the occupation which can be fed into the standard itself.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours,
Kate
