This is an exciting opportunity to join a prestigious programme of research being undertaken at the University of Birmingham. The Trials Acceleration Programme (TAP), funded by Bloodwise, was launched in 2011 to speed up the development of new treatments to blood cancer patients. The central hub at Birmingham works with clinical investigators from across the UK to provide support for the efficient running of early phase clinical trials through a network of clinical centres.
The programme of research is centred on the design and delivery of early phase clinical trials which will take place in the Cancer Research UK Clinical Trials Unit (CRCTU), one of the largest UK Clinical Research Collaboration (UKCRC) registered clinical trials units in the country, based at the Institute of Cancer and Genomic Sciences at University of Birmingham. The Unit specialises in running early and late phase cancer clinical trials in adults and children and employs a multidisciplinary team of around 200 staff including statisticians, systematic reviewers, trial management staff, research nurses, monitors, programmers, administrators and IT staff.
The CRCTU has a position available for a Senior Biostatistician (Grade 8) to work on the TAP portfolio, as part of the team that consists of around 20 biostatisticians working on a varied portfolio of trials. Biostatisticians play a central role in the Unit, actively liaising with clinical investigators, contributing to the design and conduct of clinical trials, being responsible for interim and final analysis of clinical trial data and having a key role in the presentation and publication of results. As academic members of the University, biostatisticians contribute to teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level. The CRCTU is actively involved in developing and implementing novel statistical methodology related to clinical trials and associated translational research. Members of the team are encouraged to pursue their own research interests and opportunities exist to carry out postgraduate qualifications.
The successful candidate will have a MSc or PhD in Statistics or a relevant subject with strong aptitude for statistical programming and modelling. Applicants for this senior post must possess significant previous experience of working as an applied medical statistician and will be expected to take a lead statistical role in projects within a short time of appointment. Applications from individuals looking for part time working patterns or those returning to the workplace after a break will be considered.
