Dear all,
Many of you will have the AAP questionnaire in your inboxes for the next
Balance of Programmes review:

The UK has secured leading scientific and technical roles in ESO's ELT
project, but only with the continued support of the community can we
sustain this leadership as we approach first light. Given your past
interest, can I encourage you to highlight where the ELT will be relevant
for your future research in your response.
In brief, construction of the telescope is now advancing rapidly, with
first light scheduled for 2024. The UK is leading one of the two
first-light instruments (HARMONI) and construction of the spectrograph in
the third instrument (METIS). It has well-defined roles in the next two
instruments (MOSAIC and HIRES) and we are also supporting R&D toward the
ambitious planetary camera and spectrograph (PCS). This coordinated
programme is the result of a long-term strategy to maximise the science
return to the UK over the first decade of ELT operations, while also
building expertise in the community of how best to exploit this exciting
new facility.
with best wishes,
Chris Evans
