Mike,
"Nicholas Nickleby" was a work of fiction. However, Davy-type lamps,
some specially made and sold for that purpose, were used to warm the
sumps and radiators of petrol-engined vehicles in garages during the
first half of the 20th century, the gauze providing some protection
against igniting petrol fumes.
