Subject: Goodbye 802.11ax, hello Wi-Fi 6.
Hi,
I thought colleagues might be interested in the new naming convention that will apply
to all past, current and future Wi-Fi standards from a Wi-Fi Alliance (and so public
branding / marketing / badging perspective) starting with the introduction of 802.11ax,
as those devices get certified by them. It will be back-ported to all previous IEEE
802.11 physical media standards as well on any new devices that support them.
It won't be too long before students see these new brandings on devices and start to ask,
does your network support Wi-Fi 6, or 5, or 4?
The IEEE standards still exist and continue to be developed of course for ourselves in
the technical community, but from a public awareness perspective they will disappear from
the non-technical audience's nomenclature.
It makes sense, as we as consumers don't call Blu-Ray discs what they really are technically,
which is a H.262/MPEG-2 Part 2 with H.264/MPEG-4 AVC and VC-1 H.265 codec. :-)
Regards,
Paul
