Ways to Wander the Gallery, Claire Hind & Clare Qualmann

Artists Talk and Book Launch, Tate Modern, 7pm Thursday 8th November

To book a place go through Tate Modern via this link: https://www.tate.org.uk/whats-on/tate-modern/talk/ways-wander-gallery

Dear WAN members,
We would love to see you at our book launch and artists talk next month! Our latest book published through Triarchy Press is a nice addition to the first Ways to Wander.

Here’s some more info.
All the best,

Claire and Clare.

Ways to Wander the Gallery

Drawing on a series of workshops at Tate Modern, conceived and delivered
by Claire Hind and Clare Qualmann, this book asks you to reconsider your
walked relationship with art through their concept of the Wander Score.

How playful and embodied can our wandering be in spaces that often make
our feet ache? This book is an invitation to try different ways to wander
in and well beyond the gallery inspired by artists Rebecca Horn, Bruce
Nauman, Hito Steyerl, Janet Cardiff, Julie Mehretu and others. The book
is designed to pop in your pocket, share with friends, use in teaching or
your own workshops, go on a hike, and return to the gallery. You can read
and interpret each Wander Score as instruction, or as poetry or make each
one a performance.

After the success of the 2015 publication Ways to Wander 2015 (Triarchy
Press), Claire Hind and Clare Qualmann were invited by Tate Modern to
write a program of workshops to take place in their gallery spaces during
the summer of 2017. The workshops were an exciting way to connect through
embodied practice wandering and art, art inspired wandering.
Contributions to the book are from the participants who attended the
workshops at Tate Modern, with additional Wander Score contributions from
artists Cathy Turner, Kris Darby and Blake Morris who responded to
artworks at Tate Britain, Tate Modern and Tate St Ives. Claire and Clare
offer an article discussing the project to connect artworks, walking,
text work, and instructions, along with notes on the taught workshops and
varying different ways to reflect upon wandering experiences in Tatešs
galleries and beyond.

During the launch event Claire and Clare will offer a performative talk
and discuss the workshop practice that took place in Tate Modernšs
gallery spaces, such as durational walks, rule-based ambulatory
experiences, micro-performances of the everyday, interventions and
performance walking encounters. They will also share examples of
experimental writing and drawing through performance.
