The Douglas Hospital Research Centre’s Brain Imaging Centre ( Douglas BIC) is a state of the art, imaging centre located in Montreal, Canada and affiliated with McGill University. The Douglas BIC is dedicated to conducting cutting edge clinical and pre-clinical in vivo brain imaging research in the area of mental health. The centre contains a new Siemens 3T Prisma Fit MRI Scanner for human research, a Bruker 7T Biospec 70/30 USR MRI Scanner for small animal research, and labs specialized in optogenetics, electroencephalography (EEG) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS).
Job Description:
The Douglas BIC is seeking a Software Developer as part of the Canadian Open Neuroscience Platform (CONP) initiative to provide for the planning, development, implementation, operation, maintenance and support of scientific software, neuroinformatics platforms and Open Science initiatives at our centre. The successful applicant will respond to the needs of the broader neuroscience user community at the Douglas BIC and translate interdisciplinary scientific needs from medical imaging, genetics, behavioural neurosciences, cognitive psychology and molecular biology research projects into common infrastructure, e-science platforms and software solutions. In addition, the successful applicant will provide platform and software services, organize data coordination and acquisition activities at the Douglas BIC, plan distributed infrastructure and operations, monitor and secure systems, and support users.
More specifically, the software developer will contribute to the design, coding, testing and maintaining of new and existing features for LORIS, a web-based data/project management software. This work will include both front-end and back-end components and its connection to the Canadian Open Neuroscience Platform (conp.org). Enhancements, troubleshooting, bug resolution and documentation of new and existing code is required on an ongoing basis. This position entails working seamlessly with researchers and software developers, and requires rapid adaptation to support a dynamic research community. Main responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
• Develop, deploy and distribute LORIS in line with the institutes's research goals.
• Work with the LORIS team to ensure all updates are internalized.
• Work with system administrators to ensure code is secure, usable and scalable.
• Work with neuroimaging labs at the BIC to input new neuroimaging and demographics data into LORIS
• Work with neuroimaging labs at the BIC to train users in the usage of LORIS
• Code, test, review, debug and deploy software applications/platforms.
• Develop and maintain test suites.
• Revise and update technical documentation.
• Research and analyze new and emerging technologies.
• Participate at meetings, make recommendations and provide solutions.
• Ability to work with diverse and complex requirements
Requirements:
• University degree or related work experience in computer science or related field.
• Expertise with web development (PHP, JavaScript, Bootstrap, Apache)
• Experience with relational and non-relational database systems (MySQL, NoSQL).
• Experience with Unix/Linux operating systems.
• Experience with version control systems (e.g. Git)
• Strong programming skills and understanding of modern languages.
• Knowledge of HTML5, CSS3, Bootstrap and W3C standards
• Excellent communication skills and team oriented attitude.
• Good documentation practices.
• Good organizational skills and ability to learn quickly.
• Familiarity with academic research environments.
• Academic background in imaging, genetics, or clinical sciences is an asset.
• Fluency in French and English is preferred.
