Another possibility is a magnesite quarry in Thessalonica. While I was working on the Marampa iron ore mine in Sierra Leone, I had to commission and run an Aerofall grinding mill. Warned of this at my interview, before I went out there in 1963 I arranged a visit to one of British Industrial Sand's quarries in the Midlands which had one of the two Aerofall mills then operating in the UK. BIS were very helpful, and with a view to perhaps joining them when I got tired of Sierra Leone, I kept in touch. Sadly, when I left SL in 1967 I was told BIS had no immediate vacancies, but had just been bought out by General Refractories who had a vacancy, so put me in touch with them. I went to Sheffield for an interview and was told all about this magnesite quarry in Thessalonica, northern Greece, which they had just acquired. It was very labour-intensive, I was told. Blast-hole drilling was done by hand-held drills, and all breaking of rock by fifty sledge-hammer-wielding women. It definitely needed some mechanisation, and the first thing they would want the manager they would be appointing to do would be to install a primary crusher. I have to confess that the thought of installing a crusher and thereby making fifty women, each capable of wielding a sledge hammer, redundant, did not appeal. However, before I needed to reveal my timidity, they said that there had been an uprising in Greece in which the Greek government had been thrown out of office by ten Army generals, and they weren't actually sure they had a job to offer. I sympathised with them, wished them well, and hastily withdrew, happily finding another job with consultants W S Atkins before hearing any more from General Refractories.
On the basis of the above, I presume there is a magnesite quarry in northern Greece which your friend might find of interest- not ancient, but a mineral resource.
