When recruiting midwives I think you need to look for candidates who have a strong belief in the concept of Salutogenesis, who have a commitment to women's choice even when those choices may not be within recommended protocols and who are willing to challenge medical authority using the evidence which supports normality (as so much of the well-designed research does these days) while at the same time can be a resource for doctors to learn more about normality. As many midwives qualifying today do not have much experience of non-medicalised birth candidates must be willing to learn the skills so essential to care for women in this way.
