Dear all,
The Applied Mineralogy Group, a special interest group of the Mineralogical Society of Great Britain and Ireland, is delighted to announce that the 3rd International Critical Metals Conference will be held at the Surgeons Hall in Edinburgh on the 30th of April to the 2nd of May 2019, with an ice breaker event on the evening of the 29th of April.
This conference aims to bring together researchers, both academic and industrial, who are working at different stages along the life cycle of critical metals.
Session themes will include the geology and resources of critical metals, raw materials for the decarbonisation of energy and transport, life cycle analysis and ethical sourcing of critical metals.
We are currently pulling together an amazing list of invited speakers and plenary presenters, and our programme will include ECR-led sessions and a dedicated poster session. The conference dinner, which will be included in the cost of registration, will be held on the 1st of May.
We are delighted to already be in a position to announce that Dr Evi Petavratzi and Mr Gus Gunn of the British Geological Survey will convene a session on ‘Battery Raw Materials’ at the conference. Co-authors on the recent ‘Briefing note on raw materials for batteries in electric vehicles’, Gus and Evi are at the forefront of highlighting the challenges associated with securing the supply of the critical raw materials required for the EV battery industry.
In addition Dr Kathryn Goodenough of the British Geological Survey will lead a one day pre-conference field trip on Monday the 29th of April 2019 to the East Lothian coast and Traprain Law. A free geological tour of Arthurs Seat will also be offered on Friday the 3rd of May. Further details on the fieldtrips will be published on our webpages in the coming months.
The conference will be further augmented by a special issue in the Mineralogical Magazine, the theme of which is still up for discussion, if any interested convenors would like to lead on this, please get in touch with the Secretary of the Applied Mineralogy Group.
A flier is attached to this email. Please feel free to circulate this further.
Registration and abstract submission will open in the coming months, further details will be posted on the website (https://www.minersoc.org/3rd-international-critical-metals-conference.html), mail lists and via social media @amg_min (twitter #ICMM19)
