The British Library is recruiting for 5 Manuscript Cataloguers to work on material from across its collections, including Contemporary Archives and Manuscripts, Modern Archives and Manuscripts, and Music. Archives to be worked include that of the Jamaican writer, broadcaster and co-founder of the Caribbean Artists Movement, Andrew Salkey (18 month contract).

You will undertake all aspects of the archival process including sorting and appraising, hierarchical arrangement, cataloguing, and creating name authority records. Cataloguing and name authority creation will be carried out to national and international standards using the Library’s IAMS system. In addition, you will answer specialist reader enquiries relating to the archives and publicise and promote the archives for a range of audiences.
To be successful in this role, you will possess either a professional archive qualification or substantial equivalent experience in a professional environment. You will have experience of applying national and international standards to manuscripts and/or archive cataloguing, an understanding of the preservation needs of modern archives, awareness of relevant legislation and experience of applying it to archive cataloguing, and the ability to work independently and to a high degree of accuracy. You will have relevant knowledge that would help with arrangement and description of the Library’s archival collections in one or more of the following areas: contemporary and modern literature; contemporary and modern history; contemporary theatre; Black British literature and history; music and musicians and the ability to read music.
