Room 349, 3rd floor, Senate house, Malet street, WC1E 7HU
The Institute of Latin American Studies and the Institute of Modern Languages Research are delighted to announce our second event in partnership with Charco Press: An Evening with Margarita García Robayo.
García Robayo will appear in conversation with Carolina Orloff (Founder, co-director and editor of Charco Press), Dr Cherilyn Elston (University of Reading), Professor Catherine Boyle (King’s College London), and Professor Catherine Davies (IMLR) to discuss her new book Fish Soup and the wider Colombian and Latin American literary scenes with the audience.
With a signature style that blends cynicism and beauty with an undercurrent of dark humour, Margarita García Robayo is an author who has already achieved international acclaim. Born in Cartagena, Colombia, she is the author of three novels, a book of autobiographical essays and several collections of short stories. Winner of the prestigious Casa de las Américas Prize in 2014, she was also awarded a Literary Creation Grant from the Han Nefkens Foundation and the Pompeu Fabra University in 2013. Her books have been published in Latin America and Spain, and have been translated into French, Portuguese, Italian, Hebrew and Chinese. Fish Soup is her first book to appear in English.
Fish Soup is a unique collection containing the novellas Waiting for a Hurricane, the previously unpublished Sexual Education, and the book of short stories Worse Things. Examining frayed relationships, dreams of escape, family taboos, and the strict doctrine of abstinence taught at school, García Robayo’s prose is at once blunt and poetic. Delving into the lives of her characters, she simultaneously induces sympathy and revulsion, challenging the reader’s loyalties as they immerse themselves in the unparalleled universe that is Fish Soup.
The event is free and open to the public. Please register at:
