Thanks to the support of Barts Charity, Barts Health NHS Trust Archives is looking for a Project Archivist who will catalogue records of the Charity and its predecessor organisations. The position is fixed-term for 6 months. Barts Charity manages the historic endowments of the hospitals that make up Barts Health NHS Trust and supports the work of staff and researchers at Barts Health NHS Trust and Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry. Its historic records are a rich source for research into philanthropy, fundraising and charitable giving in healthcare, and provide the historic, legal and evidential background to the ongoing work of the charity.
Role description:
This project will produce full catalogues of the historic archives of Barts Charity and its predecessor organisations, including St Bartholomew’s and the Royal London Charitable Foundation, and the respective Special Trustees of St Bartholomew’s and the London Hospitals, Whipps Cross Hospital Charity, and Newham Hospital Charity, as well as the Voluntary Board of Governors of St Bartholomew’s Hospital which is closely related to the Charity. In addition to appraising, listing, sorting and repackaging records, the post holder will work with the project conservator and volunteers to prioritise records for conservation and repackaging work, promote the collection as a research resource, and digitise illustrative material from the collections.
Barts Health NHS Trust Archives and Museums holds material dating from the 12th Century onwards, including records of over 30 hospitals, together with a significant collection of art and historic artefacts. Barts Health NHS Trust Archives, which comprises the Royal London Hospital Archives and St Bartholomew’s Hospital Archives, is an Accredited Archive Service.
