Hi Peter,
I don't think it is acceptable for use in planning applications. The purpose of it being used in any planning application I assume is to determine whether compliance with air quality objectives is likely to be achieved? Data from these instruments wouldn't be considered acceptable to Defra for reporting purposes to demonstrate compliance so I don’t see how you'd justify them being used to demonstrate compliance for a planning application. Until further official guidance is issued on their use for such purposes I wouldn't accept it as being anything other than indicative. AQ Mesh may be getting some good coverage and evidence to back up performance claims but most low cost sensors are still an unknown quantity backed up by hard to prove manufacturer claims.
Best Regards,
Andy

Subject: Low cost AQ monitors
Ladies & Gentlemen
I am advising a consultant on the use of low cost AQ monitors such as AQMesh, Motes etc. What is the general view on the acceptability of such data, in support of, or as part of, a planning application? I am aware this is not reference equivalent but my view is it is the better ones are probably better than diffusion tubes and certainly better than modelled data. Any (printable) comments welcome.
Regards
