JOB DESCRIPTION
We are seeking two postdoctoral researchers to work on fundamental studies of elementary gas-phase reactions. Your primary duties will involve using cutting-edge experimental methods to discover the mechanisms of complex chemical transformations. You will also have opportunities to apply the tools of theoretical chemistry to guide experiments, interpret the results, and validate chemical reaction models.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
Perform experiments in complex low- and high-pressure gas-phase environments using laser photolysis or jet-stirred reactors.
Quantify reaction products and follow kinetics of elusive chemical intermediates in time using time-resolved mass spectrometry or optical spectroscopy detection.
Interpret experimental data using custom-built analysis tools.
Improve existing experimental apparatus or develop novel methods and techniques.
Use creativity in solving theoretical and experimental difficulties.
Interact with numerous experimental and theory collaborators at Sandia and other institutions.
Write papers and give presentations.
Required Qualifications:
PhD, conferred within the past five years, in Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, or a related field, with a strong interest in experimental chemical reaction kinetics.
Experience in mass spectrometry, laser spectroscopy, or other molecular probe methods in the gas phase.
The ability to transmit scientific results in the peer-reviewed literature, as demonstrated by a strong publication record.
Additional desired qualifications:
Knowledge of gas-phase combustion or oxidation chemistry.
Familiarity with any of the following: quantum chemistry, transition-state theory, master-equation calculations, chemical modeling.
Experience with statistics, data analytics, or large datasets.

ABOUT OUR TEAM
The Combustion Chemistry and Diagnostics Department is part of Sandia's Combustion Research Facility (CRF) in Livermore, California, where over 100 scientists, engineers, and technologists conduct basic and applied research to improve our nation's ability to use and control combustion processes efficiently and cleanly. Under the principal sponsorship of the Department of Energy's Office of Basic Energy Sciences, the Combustion Chemistry and Diagnostics Department conducts fundamental experimental, theoretical, and modeling research to develop a foundational understanding of the key chemical processes that underlie the complex mechanisms of combustion. Additional programs investigate the effects of combustion emissions on atmospheric composition and climate. Research areas include chemical dynamics and spectroscopy, theoretical and experimental chemical kinetics, flame chemistry and modeling, and gas-phase and particulate diagnostics development and deployment.

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE)-granted security clearance.
