Subject: Special issue ‘The Making of Caribbean Not-so-Natural Disasters’
Dear all,
We just published the Introduction to the special issue ‘The Making of
Caribbean Not-so-Natural Disasters’ in Alternautas. The special issue is
comprised of 6 articles, a book review and a literary piece, which will be
published in www.alternautas.net every 2 weeks until the end of December.
We argue that hurricanes are not strictly or exclusively natural disasters.
Policy legacies of western powers' occupations, soaring levels of
inequality, unequal status and commodification are some of the structural
factors amplifying, behind the scenes, the effects of disasters.
Please find below the list of articles in the issue:
1. Resilience and community pride after a hurricane: counter-narratives
from rural water systems in Puerto Rico, by Javier A. Arce-Nazario
2. The plantation as a source of hurricane vulnerability, by Oscar Webber
3. Entering the Contact Zone ? Between the Neoliberal Subject of Resilience
and the Possibility of Emancipatory Politics in Puerto Rico’s Post-Maria by
César Pérez-Lizasuain
4. Cuba, Irma, and ongoing exceptionalism in the Caribbean, by Robert Coates
5. Rewiring Puerto Rico: Power and Empowerment After Hurricane Maria, by
Lily Bui
6. The Politics of Survival in Puerto Rico: The Balance of Forces in the
Wake of Hurricane María, by Fernando Tormos
7. Book Review: Naomi Klein's The Battle for Paradise. Puerto Rico takes
on the Disaster Capitalists, by Sarah Molinari
8. Poem: The danger of sighing while looking up, by Celeste Ramos
Happy reading!
