Hmm..I get that one mixed up a lot. I did a bit of google search..
Oxford dictionary and Grammarist says it's a difference between British vs American spelling..the US spells it as Artifact, British as Artefact.
The Science Dictionary goes bit further and says ''Artifact: An object produced or shaped by human craft, especially a tool, weapon, or ornament of archaeological or historical interest.
Artefact: An artificial product or effect observed in a natural system, especially one introduced by the technology used in scientific investigation or by experimental error.''
That doesn't help much..does it?
