The Museum of Wimbledon is seeking a volunteer Manuscripts Curator and another volunteer Paper Conservator.
We are a small volunteer-run independent museum in Wimbledon, South London, with mixed collections ranging from art, natural history, archaeology, photographs, and social history to large numbers of paper-based documents of various kinds about the Wimbledon area. The Museum was founded in 1916 and has some fascinating items in the Collections. We are an accredited museum.
We have a 'Manuscripts' collection which includes manuscripts, some very old, but also items which properly belong in other types of collections or are parts of split-up collections. Some are also archives. The Manuscripts Collection needs preventive and remedial conservation, as well as documentation following the Spectrum Standard for museums. The archives known and split-up need to be documented, some for the first time.
We are looking for someone with manuscript/archive experience to help organize, assess and care for this collection.
Our current volunteer Paper Conservator has too much to do and is concentrating on the Art Collection and urgent items.
Another qualified paper conservator working on site is much needed.
Most of our present curatorial team are formerly or currently from the museum and archive world or training for it.
Some are role sharing here.
As the Museum is open to the public on Saturday and Sunday afternoons only there would be no work space in those periods. We work weekdays or evenings on the Collections.
My hours are flexible in order to suit those of our volunteer curatorial team.
If you have some time to spare to help, we would love to hear from you. Please contact me to discuss and find out more.
