Forest Ecosystem Modeller, Forest Research
Based in Farnham, Surrey or in Wales
Forest Research (FR) is the research Agency of the Forestry Commission. It carries out research in a number of areas related to forests and woodlands. The current post involves working in the Forest Mensuration, Modelling and Forecasting (FMMF) Science Group. The main focus of the work of the Science Group is the development and application of methodologies and models to quantify and improve the economic and environmental performance of forestry systems. In particular the Science Group leads research in the areas of: Tree and timber measurement; monitoring and modelling of forest growth dynamics; modelling and forecasting carbon and GHG balances; LCA and wood supply chains; forest carbon management and carbon accounting methods; practical methods and tools for supporting forestry practice and operations. The Science Group has also a track record in the design and implementation of large computer-based systems for the assessment of the development of forests at regional and national scale under different scenarios for future climate and forestry policy and practice.
The successful candidate will work within a small team of scientists in the FMMF Science Group on the development of “elemental” models of tree and forest growth which represent the building blocks of more complex forest growth simulators. This will also require close collaboration with FR scientists in other groups, such as Tree and Wood Properties and Forest Management.
