Wise advice from Phil. I know this is a recurrent issue. Sheffield managed to get residents on side and helping the LA so this may be a way forward. Th e ideal would be a number of tubes at increasing distances from the source but be ready to explain the occasional "odd" result. If only we could harness the enthusiasm of local residents to run their own studies. I am assuming this tube has come from FoE who are selling this "service" as part of their campaign. Perhaps Gradko if could provide an uncertainty value for their tubes it would help.

Subject: Re: Outdoor versus indoor NO2 levels
Hi Neil
Oh the deep joys of enthusiastic residents!
There have been a number of studies looking at the differences between indoor/outdoor air pollutants, and there is a long bibliography here - https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK138707/ which may serve as a useful starting point?
I agree with Peter though, sometimes a resident armed with a diffusion tube is a dangerous thing. I have been accused on many occasions of hiding an air quality problem because the Council doesn’t monitor at (X) location precisely where (X) location is generally on a roundabout where no one lives because people do not grasp the concept of NO2 reducing in concentration with distance from the source.
Perhaps offer to undertake a proper study for him at his property to allay the fears? Although I have had one case where a similarly enthusiastic resident declined my offer, presumably on the basis they might be proven wrong and take away what appeared to be their main occupation...
Good luck!
