Dear friends and colleagues,
We would like to invite you to take part in our upcoming Lab 12, 'Learning from art practices?’, to be held at the ASA Conference in Oxford on 21 September in room 14 of the Examination Schools.
The lab will be an experimental space for anthropologists interested in the possibilities between art and anthropology and will work better with a numerous and active participation. Hence, we count on many of you!
The lab seeks to reflect on the potentials/limitations of existing projects in art and anthropology to challenge contemporary questions pertaining to both these practices. We're interested in investigating whether the encounter between art and anthropology is a useful way to renew/recreate anthropology and if so, in what sense might this occur.
Speakers Anna Grimshaw, Patrick Laviolette, Jonas Tinius, Alex Flynn and Giulia Battaglia, have already confirmed their presence to brainstorm a particular keyword that is pertinent to their practice between art and anthropology. Everyone is welcome to come and participate, and after the invited speakers, everyone will have a possibility to talk about their own experience and propose relevant keywords to art/anthropology.
The lab will be organised as follows:
1st lab session (9.00-10.30)
5 min: general introduction
45 min: the invited speakers present their keywords
40 min: the group brainstorms the keywords proposed by the speakers - introducing themselves and commenting, accepting, criticising, opposing and/or proposing new keywords for collective reflection.
2nd lab session (11.00-12.30)
15 min: Alex and Giulia will summarise what happened in the first session and introduce a practical art-based exercise borrowing from an existing art form/dispositif and applying it to the theme of the lab
45 min: the art-exercise will take place inside the room with the participants, the speakers and the convenor included.
30 min: participants will present/reflect about their 'findings' through the short experience of the art-exercise
3rd lab session (16.00-17.30)
This last session will include a general reflection about 'what we might learn from art practices' and reflections about a possible lexicon moving forward. As this session also coincides with the end of the conference, chances are that we will relocate to the Turf Tavern pub for discussions and drinks.
We really hope to see many of you at the lab to reflect on the potentials/limitations of 're-creating' anthropology in dialogue with artistic practices!
