Hi Mary,
We have a number of similar projects at LSHTM that require an electronic data capture system for fieldwork. A decision was taken to setup an institutional instance of Open Data Kit (ODK) that could be used by all staff and students. This service is provided for free, but funded researchers are encouraged to allocate £300 - £500 in their grant application to cover maintenance and training. Details on the setup can be found at http://opendatakit.lshtm.ac.uk/.
I've forwarded your email to the ODK administrator who will be able to provide info on the reason it was chosen over the other options.
All the best,
Gareth

Subject: Electronic data capture systems
Hello,
Does anyone have experience of electronic data capture systems (specifically Open Data Kit and / or REDCap)?
One of our researchers is planning fieldwork in Malawi and the partner institution there uses these platforms. She would like any information which would help her choose which system to go with.
An alternative might be to use our institutional account with Online Surveys, but we're not sure how local access would be implemented and whether this works well offline.
Any thoughts welcome,
Mary
